Curriculum

Francescomaria Marino was born in Bari (Italy) on 1968.
He got the Cum Laude Master Degree, and the Ph. D. in Electronic Engineering, both from the Polytechnic of Bari, respectively on 1991 and 1995.

1991
His Master Thesis concerned a VLSI bit-serial convolver, able to on-the-fly process Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) signals, on-the-fly processing being a processing which is performed at the same throughput as the data acquisition. Thanks to the outstanding level of this work, he won two Prizes, sponsored respectively by Firestone and by Telecom (formerly, SIP).
1992-1994
He won a three-years doctoral fellowship (sponsored by the Polytechnic of Bari), for working towards a Ph.D. degree at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (DEE) of the Polytechnic of Bari. In this period, he continued to investigate on the on-the-fly computing architectures, both improving the SAR data processing case, and exploring a fully three-dimensional Positron Emission Tomography (3D PET).
1995
He won a one-year fellowship (sponsored by the Italian National Research Council, CNR), and worked as Research Associate at the Institute of Image and Signal Processing (IESI-CNR).
He defined an architecture for on-the-fly computing the optical flow of an autonomous mobile vehicle (AMV).
1996-1997
He won two one-year fellowships (sponsored respectively by the CNR and the Polytechnic of Bari), for performing research in a Foreign Research Centre.
He exploited this chance, for being invited as Visiting Researcher at the Application Specific Processing Group of the University of Texas at Austin (TX, USA), under the guidance of Prof. Earl E. Swartzlander.
He developed a parallel approach for computing multidimensional transforms without inter-processors data exchange, thus achieving impressive speed ups.
1997-1999
He gained two consecutive one-year grants as Research Associate (sponsored by Intel Co.), for performing research at the Telecommunications Research Centre (TRC) of the Arizona State University at Tempe (AZ, USA), under the guidance of Prof. Lina J. Karam.
He developed a Discrete Wavelets Transform (DWT)-based perceptually-lossless image compression algorithm and architecture for RGB capturing images devices. The main achieved results were patented by Intel Co.
1999-2002
After having won a national competition for a permanent position as Assistant Professor in Computer Science in 1998, Francesco got this role at the First Faculty of Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Bari.
1999 (Summer)
He was invited by Prof. Jaakko Astola as Visiting Researcher at Tampere University of Technology (Finland), economically sponsored by the Tampere International Centre of Signal Processing (TICSP). During this period, he cooperated with Dr. David Guevorkian (Nokia), defining VLSI architectures for computing the 1-D and 2-D DWT, targeted to be optimal in the AT2 sense.
Since 2002
In 2001, He won a national competition for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Computer Science at the Economic & Business Faculty of the University of Lecce (Italy). Thanks to this achievement, since 2002, he upgraded his position from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor of Computer Architectures at the First Faculty of Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Bari.
Since 2009
He is the Scientific Director of AVLab (Artificial Vision Laboratory) within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, now the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bari.
2012–2015 term
He was elected Coordinator of the Master's Degree Program in Computer Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bari.
2015–2018 term
He was elected Coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree Program in Computer Engineering and Automation Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bari.
