In my current position as an associate professor at the DEI, Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy), I advise a team of Ph.D. and MSc-level students working on various aspects of personalized machine learning (PML) and recommender systems (RS). I have been a visiting researcher at the University of San Diego (USA). I earned my Ph.D. in computer science with a focus on recommender systems from the Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy), where I also spent time as a visiting scholar at Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria). I received my M.Sc. in EE from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), where I finished my M.Sc. thesis at Ericsson Research in Stockholm (Sweden). Currently, I am focusing most of my research efforts on exploring the "consequences of personalization" in PML systems and methods for mitigating their unintended side effects, be they based on an examination of data characteristics or an algorithmic intervention. As a result, my current work investigates the field of causality and counterfactual interventions. Below is a summary of my past and current research.
The recommender systems community at large acknowledges my work as a pioneering contribution to the study of "multi-modal information access," focoused in particular on the development of various forms of MM recommender systems and conversational agents. Important steps forward in the evolution of these systems have been taken due to my efforts, especially (CIKM'22, SIGIR'21, CVPR'21, UMUAI'19, RecSys'18, RecSys'17). Check out my most recent surveys on the above stated topics, which were written in collaboration with leading scholars and companies such as Amazon, Spotify etc. (CSUR'23, RSHB'22-MM, CSUR'21, CS-Review'23, IJMIR'18).
